Mrs. Thompson's class is building marshmallow towers, observing erosion with sugar cubes and rocks, and are using food to show base 10 counting. They used crackers for hundreds, pretzels for tens and marshmallows for ones!
How Sand is Made
Activity to demonstrate Erosion and how sand is made.
Students used sugar cubes to represent the soft rocks on a beach or on mountains.
The rocks were added to a cup and students shook and shook for about 5 minutes.
They were so surprised to see how the soft rocks wore away and caused erosion.
Save Fred
Students wrote about what they learned and experienced during the activity in their journals. This activity was done to show students how it is important to follow rules. It is also important to work together and try different solutions to Save Fred from Drowning.
Problem: How can you and your team save Fred using only 4 paper clips? You may not touch Fred(gummy worm), the boat (plastic cup), or the life preserver (gummy lifesaver) directly with your hands!
Second graders were able to SAVE FRED!
Building the Tallest Toothpick and Marshmallow Tower
First week of school to Learn how to work as a team..
Experiment: Each group of second graders were given toothpicks and mini marshmallows to build  the tallest  tower in a certain time frame. The students worked together to brainstorm ideas of how their tower could be the tallest. Students completed a STEM data sheet of their planning and final creation and how they changed their ideas as they worked. The towers had to survive an “Earthquake” shaking of the desk to be successful.
